Dreamer College Graduation Class of 2017

The college undocumented student Dreamer graduation for 2017 is significant this year for several reasons, they are the first graduating class to attend all four years of university under a fully implemented California Dream Act (AB130/AB131) that provides private and state financial college aid, and they also graduate under a climate that both welcomes their labor under DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) but an administration that speaks against them in the harshest terms.

While benefitting from the CA Dream Act and DACA, this graduating class would have been too young to advocate for these policies. But their generation represents the middling generation of immigrants who are between nothing for the immigrants who came before them and full legalization for their parents yet to come.

Karen, the Chief Policy Analyst for DREAM Team Los Angeles is among the class of 2017 and reflects upon it this way;

“Whether you see your diploma as a ticket for financial success for your family or as kindling to burn down the system to replace it with something better, history will regard us as the generation who worked hard for full legalization of our parents.”

DREAM Team Los Angeles will continue the fight for all 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S. And we join with a newly energized #RESIST movement of all groups under threat by the current administration; immigrants and refugees, women, healthcare defenders, climate protectors, Muslims persecuted for their faith. The class of 2017 will be remembered as the class that turned the tide for immigrant and human rights.
