Dream Team Members Garner Online Traction

Dream Team LA members Nancy Meza, Carlos Amador and Erick Huerta were all featured for their open editorials and blog post on two different sites. All three members continued the ongoing dialogue of what it means to be young, undocumented while growing up in the United States with their individual contributions.

Both Nancy, along with Erick, contributed to the brand new “Dream Activist Blogging Series” on the Huffington Post, Latino Voices page. In her post, “Immigration Is Not Just An Election Year Issue, It Is A Reality Millions Of Undocumented People In The U.S Have To Face Every Day,” Nancy discusses the need for politicians and multi-million dollar corporations, to be held accountable for their role in driving immigrants from their home countries with unbalanced foreign trade policies, such as NAFTA. Dream Team L.A. Member on KPFK

Dream Team L.A. member, Mariella Saba, was recently invited to the KPFK studios to discuss and share the work DTLA does in the immigrant rights movement. “Sojourner Truth with Margaret Prescod,” an early morning show that features daily public affairs, with guest host Hamid Khan, that featured a discussion on the affects Secure Communities has had in communities here in Los Angeles.

Mariellas segment comes in at the 25:40 mark, as she describes some of the first hand effects Scomm has had in families and children in the Pico Union area. During the conversation, Mariella as “how do they make business from our pain?” when the discussion turns to families being separated from each other and  placed in detention centers that see individuals as money, rather than humans. The perceptive discussion continues on for 10 minutes as she also shares the need for self care and healing within any movement, its importance and how she has facilitated these elements in DTLA.

“Dream Visualized” Images by Pocho1

This project was inspired by the life of Cinthya Felix and Tam Tran, one of our great women Dream Act leaders who passed away last May. Tam was an activist, film maker and scholar. Tam was also a loving sister, friend and daughter. Like many undocumented students, Tam had different identities that many people don’t see.Through this project we plan to capture these different identities, in order to put a human face on the immigration story

In this project, we will follow seven Dream students throughout their entire day. We want to capture them with their families, friends, at school, at work, and in their communities.

International photographer Pocho-1 documents political and cultural movements. He began fighting for the interests of his community while furthering his education at Cal State Northridge. Studying under Rudy Acuna, founder of the first Xican@ studies department. Moving back to the Bay Area, he attended San Francisco State University earning a MA in Ethnic Studies. He is presently pursuing his 2nd Masters at USC Rossier School of Education. For more information please visit: http://www.pocho1.com/

Ciclavia Dream Contingent Sunday 4-10

Art by Julio Saldalgo

Join Dreamers and Allies for the first Ciclavia of 2011 by advocating for the rights of all undocumented immigrants and the CA Dream Act by riding your bike through the streets of L.A. with thousands of fellow Angelinos. Join us at Hollenbeck Park in Boyle Heights starting at 9 a.m. as we meet up and prepare to ride out by 10 a.m. We will be attaching art works on folks bikes in a safe and visible fashion and going over some guide lines to ride safely as a large or small group. We will be doing the entire 7 mile route, chanting, talking to fellow riders and sharing our stories, cause you know, we’re undocumented and unafraid like that.

ABOUT CICLAVIA: With a hugely successful 10-10-2010 under our belt, we are currently preparing for Los Angeles’ next four ”open-street” Sundays in 2011. Seven and a half miles of streets were car-free from 10 AM – 3 PM on Sunday October 10th 2010. In 2011, we’re doing the initial route again and again, and reaching out to new neighborhoods and adding new spurs.
CicLAvia makes the streets will safe for people to walk, skate, play and ride a bike. There are activities along the route. Shop owners and restaurants are encouraged to open their doors to people along the CicLAvia.A Ciclovía is not just for recreation. It is social integration. Ciclovías started in Bogotá, Colombia, over thirty years ago as a response to the congestion and pollution of city streets. Now they happen throughout Latin America and the United States, connecting communities and giving people a break from the stress of car traffic. The health benefits are immense. Ciclovías bring families outside of their homes to enjoy the streets, our largest public space. In Los Angeles we need CicLAvia more than ever. Our streets are congested with traffic, our air is polluted with toxic fumes, our children suffer from obesity and other health conditions caused by the scarcity of public space and safe, healthy transportation options. CicLAvia creates a temporary park for free, simply by removing cars from city streets. It creates a network of connections between our neighborhoods and businesses and parks with corridors filled with fun. We can’t wait to see you at CicLAvia!
