Join Dreamers and Allies for the first Ciclavia of 2011 by advocating for the rights of all undocumented immigrants and the CA Dream Act by riding your bike through the streets of L.A. with thousands of fellow Angelinos. Join us at Hollenbeck Park in Boyle Heights starting at 9 a.m. as we meet up and prepare to ride out by 10 a.m. We will be attaching art works on folks bikes in a safe and visible fashion and going over some guide lines to ride safely as a large or small group. We will be doing the entire 7 mile route, chanting, talking to fellow riders and sharing our stories, cause you know, we’re undocumented and unafraid like that.
Riders who weren’t able to participate in the L.A. to O.C. Dream Ride are highly encouraged to participate in this event/ride. Riders of ALL LEVELS welcomed. Beach Cruisers are perfect for riding this mild pace ride. Bike first aid and personal first aid kits will be on hand just in case anyone gets a flat tire or they have mechanical issues with their bikes.
THERE WILL BE A CICLAVIA WORK PARTY THIS FRIDAY 5-8 P.M. AT THE DOWNTOWN L.A. LABOR CENTER. IF ANYONE HAS EXTRA PAINT, BRUSHES AND POSTER BOARDS, PLEASE BRING THEM ALONG WITH YOU. WE WILL BE CREATING ART WORK THAT WILL BE ATTACHED TO BIKES FOR SUNDAY. THE DOWNTOWN L.A. UCLA LABOR CENTER IS LOCATED AT675 SOUTH PARK VIEW STREET LOS ANGELES, CA 90057

ABOUT CICLAVIA: With a hugely successful 10-10-2010 under our belt, we are currently preparing for Los Angeles’ next four ”open-street” Sundays in 2011. Seven and a half miles of streets were car-free from 10 AM – 3 PM on Sunday October 10th 2010. In 2011, we’re doing the initial route again and again, and reaching out to new neighborhoods and adding new spurs.
CicLAvia makes the streets will safe for people to walk, skate, play and ride a bike. There are activities along the route. Shop owners and restaurants are encouraged to open their doors to people along the CicLAvia.A Ciclovía is not just for recreation. It is social integration. Ciclovías started in Bogotá, Colombia, over thirty years ago as a response to the congestion and pollution of city streets. Now they happen throughout Latin America and the United States, connecting communities and giving people a break from the stress of car traffic. The health benefits are immense. Ciclovías bring families outside of their homes to enjoy the streets, our largest public space. In Los Angeles we need CicLAvia more than ever. Our streets are congested with traffic, our air is polluted with toxic fumes, our children suffer from obesity and other health conditions caused by the scarcity of public space and safe, healthy transportation options. CicLAvia creates a temporary park for free, simply by removing cars from city streets. It creates a network of connections between our neighborhoods and businesses and parks with corridors filled with fun. We can’t wait to see you at CicLAvia!
